Are axolotls OK with goldfish?

Answered by Shane Martin

I have to say, from my personal experience, axolotls and goldfish are definitely not compatible tank mates. Let me explain why.

First of all, axolotls and goldfish have very different basic living conditions. Axolotls are amphibians and they require a fully aquatic environment, while goldfish are freshwater fish. This means that axolotls need a tank with no land area, whereas goldfish thrive in a tank with some open space for swimming and exploring.

Another crucial difference is the water parameters needed for each species. Axolotls prefer cooler water temperatures, around 60-68°F (15-20°C), while goldfish prefer slightly warmer water, around 68-74°F (20-23°C). Maintaining the appropriate temperature for both species simultaneously can be challenging and stressful for both animals.

Furthermore, goldfish have a tendency to nip at the tails and gills of other fish, including axolotls. This behavior can cause significant stress and injury to the axolotls. Axolotls have delicate external gills and long tails, which make them vulnerable to such attacks. It's heartbreaking to witness your axolotl being harassed and potentially harmed by its tank mate.

In addition to these fundamental differences, axolotls and goldfish also have different dietary requirements. Axolotls are carnivores and need a diet rich in protein, while goldfish are omnivores and require a varied diet including both plant matter and protein. Ensuring both species receive the appropriate nutrition in a shared tank can be quite challenging.

To sum it up, based on my personal experiences and knowledge, it is best to keep axolotls and goldfish in separate tanks. They have different basic living conditions, water parameters, dietary needs, and goldfish may stress and injure the axolotls. It's important to prioritize the well-being and happiness of each individual species by providing them with their specific requirements for a healthy and fulfilling life.
