What is the most common referral for physical therapy?

Answered by Tommy Wike

In my experience as a physical therapist, the most common referral for physical therapy comes from orthopedic surgeons. These are the doctors who specialize in treating musculoskeletal conditions, such as fractures, joint injuries, and spine problems. They often refer their patients to physical therapy as part of their treatment plan. I have received numerous referrals from orthopedic surgeons for patients recovering from surgeries, such as knee replacements or rotator cuff repairs.

Another common referral source for physical therapy is general practitioners. These are the doctors who provide primary care to patients and treat a wide range of medical conditions. They often refer patients to physical therapy for various reasons, including chronic pain, injuries, or to help manage chronic conditions like arthritis. I have worked with many patients who were referred to me by their general practitioners for these reasons.

Internal medicine specialists also play a significant role in referring patients to physical therapy. These doctors focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. They often refer patients to physical therapy for conditions such as back pain, fibromyalgia, or post-surgical rehabilitation. I have had several patients who were referred to me by internal medicine specialists for these types of conditions.

In a recent study I came across, the results were consistent with my own experiences. The study found that orthopedists accounted for 59% of the total referrals, while family and internal medicine practitioners accounted for 32% of the referrals. This means that these two specialties alone accounted for 91% of the total referrals for physical therapy.

While there may be other healthcare professionals who refer patients to physical therapy, such as chiropractors or sports medicine doctors, in my own practice, I have found that orthopedic surgeons, general practitioners, and internal medicine specialists are the main referral sources. These doctors trust in the effectiveness of physical therapy to help their patients recover from injuries, manage pain, and improve their overall function and quality of life.

The most common referral for physical therapy comes from orthopedic surgeons, followed by general practitioners and internal medicine specialists. These doctors play a crucial role in referring patients to physical therapy and recognizing the benefits it can provide in their patients' recovery and overall well-being.
