How many prophets in Islam?

Answered by Duane Gowans

In my experience and understanding, Islam teaches that there are 25 prophets mentioned in the Qur'an. These include well-known figures such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, among others. However, it is believed by some scholars that there have been a total of 124,000 prophets sent by Allah throughout .

I remember learning about these prophets during my Islamic studies classes. We were taught that each prophet was chosen by Allah to deliver His message to the people of their time. They were given the responsibility to guide humanity towards the path of righteousness and to remind them of their obligations towards Allah.

One of the most fundamental teachings of all these prophets was the belief in the oneness of Allah. They emphasized the importance of monotheism and rejected the worship of idols or any other deities. This concept of tawhid, or the belief in the unity of Allah, is considered a central tenet of Islam.

Another common theme among the teachings of these prophets was the emphasis on moral and ethical conduct. They urged people to be just, honest, and compassionate towards one another. They taught the importance of upholding justice, helping the needy, and treating others with respect and kindness.

Interestingly, while the prophets taught the same basic ideas, they also faced different challenges and addressed the specific needs of their communities. For example, Prophet Moses was sent to liberate the Israelites from the tyranny of Pharaoh, while Prophet Muhammad was sent as the final messenger to all of humanity.

Some prophets were also given holy , such as the Torah given to Moses and the Gospel given to Jesus, to guide their followers. These books were meant to provide further guidance and clarification on the teachings of the respective prophets.

The belief in the prophets and their teachings is an essential aspect of Islamic faith. Muslims believe that these prophets were chosen by Allah as representatives of His divine message, and their teachings form the foundation of Islamic principles and values.
